Liquid Refreshment

More and more Brits are becoming oenophiles with a third of us having at least ten bottles in storage at home and one in three having visited a vineyard on a recent holiday. However, we’ve still got some way to go with one in four of us thinking Sauvignon Blanc is a brand name rather than a grape variety and nearly half of Brits admitting they are completely lost when choosing from a wine menu.

Research released today by Montana also revealed that there is a real thirst for easy-to-understand wine knowledge. What people most want to know about wine is the difference between grape varieties, followed closely by what constitutes a good year or a bad year.

However, what we do know is what we like to drink - according to the research, we are increasingly deserting our Old World neighbours and prefer to drink wines from the New World regions. This is supported by sales figures that show consumption of New Zealand , South African and US wines are growing far faster than wines from European countries.

To help improve the nation’s wine knowledge, on 2nd October at 7pm, Montana is hosting the world’s first live and interactive wine tasting at Montana Vintage Experience.

Montana is also offering six Brits (and their partners) the opportunity to experience New Zealand winemaking first hand with a money-can’t-buy trip to the Montana vineyards and the chance to experience winemaking first hand. The ‘Vintage Experience’ competition which launches today and runs until the end of December can be entered by answering a series of simple questions via the competition website.

Annabelle Kuhn, Head of Marketing – Wine at Pernod Ricard UK (owners of Montana), commented, “More people in the UK are drinking wine than ever before but don’t necessarily know a lot about it and how to make an informed choice; this research has shown just how interested people are and their appetite for learning more. That’s why we are launching the Montana Vintage Experience website, where people can not only learn from our series of downloadable, unstuffy and easy to digest vodcasts – but some will also have the chance to experience wine-making first hand in New Zealand in the Vintage Experience competition.”
