Liquid Refreshment

InterWined is not English. InterWined may be written in English, but often this is where the similarities end.

We present this shaky intro as a segue to an even shakier premise: the English approach to wine is so very unique that to the outsider, it is sometimes puzzling.

Take for example the recent decision of a food critic to pair zinfandel with curry.

While not seeing a need to inform us on who actually made the wine, he writes of the pairing:
“A cracking bottle of Californian zinfandel completed the feast, resplendent with blackberries, boot leather and perhaps just a hint of mint. It was well structured with a long and warm taste and just the foil for our rich and spicy main dishes.”

So the seemingly illogical pairing actually worked well, as it turns out. Who would have thought?

There is something equally puzzling about a concept where one pays (and in true English form, one pays alot) to do work that, under normal circumstances, one should get paid to do instead:

“Three Choirs Vineyard in Gloucestershire, England’s most awarded single estate vineyard, have the ideal gift for any wine lover or vineyard owner in the making — a wine appreciation day. Visitors get to experience working in a vineyard themselves and can include anything from pruning, monitoring fermentations or grape picking. It’s not all hard work, as the day also includes a tutored wine tasting and a 3-course lunch with matching wines. Not a bad way to support English produce!”

£135.00 per person including the three course lunch and two bottles of wine.
