Great recipe... think I'll give the wine a skip, tho. Also liked the shout-out to Channel 4... which also played The Road to Guantanamo last night (on More4 tonight), which I'm in!

I'm a bit puzzled.

Couture isn't being launched today -- it was launched in July last year.

And are you certain that it doesn't show the origin of the wine? Suerly that is a legal requirement. Isn't it all on the back label?

Hi Peter,

Thanks for the comments.

Well spotted. The Couture wine was officially launched with Threshers on 15 August 2007 not 2008.

As for the label, toward the lower middle of the back label after the cartoon, it does say Wine of the Western Cape, and, in very small print below that Wine of South Africa — thus satisfying its legal requirements.

My point was more that Stormhoek has chosen to shift the focus of the wine away from the country of origin, the grapes, and the growing region toward the label and the prominent tagline "Best Served On Ice". To my mind, it’s a clever way of overcoming the poor quality of the wine.

The important thing about Couture is that it is pink and meant to be drunk over ice. Thats the marketing and I think that it knows the market it is aiming at, and they are not buying terroir. As for varietal mix that can change batch by batch, and so could the country it comes from.

Its a brand, like Blossom Hill, which is also positioning itself to vary the source of the grapes.

If you want a pink South African wine which does proclaim is source and terroir, look for the Delheim Pinotage Rose 2008 - Wine Soc have it. Family owned estate, they werethe first to make a pink Pinotage in 1973.
