Liquid Refreshment

A recent visit to London’s Cyberandy came with more than simple sugar rush; it also came with a jolt when my eyes spied a range of fairtrade, organic chocolate imported from Austria.

With labels announcing such exotic flavours as “Bacon Bits”, “Tofu and Sake”, “Banana Curry”, “Beetroot and Galangal”, “Candied Cranberries and Ceps” and “Lemon Polenta”, the Austrian chocolatier Zotter might well be responsible for the most dramatic innovation in chocolate bars, since the Swiss introduced milk chocolate nearly a quarter century after English Quakers Joseph Fry & Son’s 1847 confectionary first entered the market.

And while the titles might seem like a somewhat provocative marketing gimmick — are there really bacon bits in the Bacon Bits chocolate bar? — each bar of chocolate does in fact include the corresponding ingredients necessary to ensure that it tastes of its label’s description. So, while there aren’t any bacon bits in the Bacon Bits chocolate bar per se, there is rendered pork lard! And, maybe that’s cheating a bit, but there are bananas and curry in the Banana Curry chocolate bar and beetroots in almond cream atop galangal in the bar of chocolate with Beetroot and Galangal (a kind of ginger, if you were curious).

What’s more, InterWined being what it is (a wine site), there are four wine-flavoured varieties from which to choose and imbibe: “Green Veltliner Wine – Long Pepper”, “Marc de Champagne”, “Wine with Curd Drops”, and “Schönberger Red Wine”.

And how do they all taste? Well, InterWined hasn’t tried all 50-odd flavours, but those that it did try proved Jozef Zotter a master chocolatier, capable of making the most exiting chocolate in the world — because who else could pull off “Coffee – Plum and Caramelized Bacon”, the insane-sounding combination of plums marinated in coffee and red wine with caramelised bacon and chocolate.
