Getting Rid of Goulash

Today marks the first and, hopefully, last day I eat Hungarian Goulash.

Now, in a completely unrelated matter, two wine reviews for one Spanish producer. Actually the second wine would pair nicely with Goulash, I suspect. But I’ll never know (see first line of entry).

Family-run wine producer Albet i Noya has been around for awhile and I reckon that they were one of the first organic grape growers in Spain.

Their wines are widely available in the UK, and these two bottlings came from independent merchant, Highbury Vintners.

2006 Can Vendrell de la Codina a blend of Chardonnay and Xarello. High amounts of citrus in the nose, lemony almost. The wine feels juicy initially, then after a short, bright burst, it shifts into a long tart finish. Overall, the wine is fairly dry. Not too bad, just expected better. £7, 8.4 points.

2001 Colleccio Cabernet Sauvignon is a better wine. Much better. This wine is also juicy, with a long dry finish. The nose is quite strong and muddles up blackberry with some cedar and a touch of dill. Getting close to being too oaky, but luckily it steps away from the precipice before falling off. £13, 8.9 points.

Oh yes, the InterWined ratings scale is a very complex, highly leveraged index based on multiple sliding variables.

Let’s use an example: consider the “lack of taste” versus “loss of sobriety” rating downgrade trigger.

With this type of stress test, an inverse event, in this case, say, a statement to the contrary, as in “much less”… would deleverage the value by probably three or four points.

If a wine is enjoyed ‘much less’ it then gets rated closer to six points… not a wine one would wish to buy and therefore not published on the site.

So, therefore, using this results summary, the upside to this value should not be measured a ‘at just 0.5 point higher,” but better viewed as “50 basis points greater.”

…doesn’t that sound much better?
