Liquid Refreshment

InterWined was recently invited to the Millenium Dome in London to sit in a posh box and watch comedian Chris Rock perform.

What was interesting is that Rock’s performances have changed little over the years. While fun, and at times offensive (heavy on the n-word) his topics remain predictable (politics, race, sexuality). Same joke, different day.

Yet is predictability the goal of a wine importer’s standard bearer? I have to ask, because the box seating offered Beck’s and Stella beer, and either Berry Bros. & Rudd House white or red wine (now under screw cap).

In our opinion, if you sell yourself as a high-end wine merchant, then your low end stuff should be pretty darn good as well… since you know so much about the market.

Our opinion is the same for a sold-out show where people spend good money listening to one man using a microphone (is there a cheaper way to stage an event?)

In both cases, we have a reasonable expectation for a certain level of quality. No pyrotechnics, no fog machines… just enjoyment, plain and simple.

I tried the BB&R red and like the Chris Rock show, I didn’t see it through to the end. Not sure what I expected with the wine, but should not have received something insipid. After all, if fine wine is your business how hard can it be to get an under £5 bottle of Vin de Pays correct?

And ideal pair to summer BBQ’s the BB&R website states, but certainly not right with trite comedy. Neither went down well.
