Liquid Refreshment

This is a Valentine’s day shot out to our financial director Duncan Webster, who finally talked his Bahama Mama, Ramona, into marrying him this week.

We celebrated her (questionable) decision to say ‘yes’ with a quick glass of Bruno Paillard Premiere Cuvee, at the trendy Mercer for £9 a glass. The Champagne is a non-vintage (sourced from grapes grown from harvests in more than one year) blend of mainly Pinot Noir (45%), with Chardonnay (33%) and Pinot Meunier (22%), and it as perfect for the occasion, as Duncan scored a massive ring for his gal. It is a totally bling Champer for a totally broke wine blogger who is obliged to buy his mate a drink in such a circumstance.

The wine is balanced and complex, with a sharp crispiness in the front taste. There was some lovely minerality with vanilla biscuit and a proper, dry finish. Incredibly balanced, and you can expect no less from any of Bruno’s wines. He’s a small producer with heaps of terribly French opinions, but he never compromises on his wines. We are lucky to have them.

Just as Duncan is lucky to have Ramona.

Congratulations, you two.

Now, when are we going to see some babies?

excellent choices - by which I mean The Mercer and the Bruno Paillard - I’ve never met Duncan or Ramona so cannot comment.

Went to The Mercer recently with 3 colleagues and tried 4 different 250ml carafes over lunch. Great way to try loads of wines, even over lunch.

Always liked Bruno Paillard Champagnes too. I have a vintage bottle around somewhere.

You have a bottle of Paillard lying aroung ’somewhere’? If you like, I will pop down to South London to help you find it!

I didn’t notice the carafe concept at The Mercer, but that sounds like a wicked bargain. Next time you are in The City for such a lunch, email me, and I’ll treat you to one.

ha! OK, it is under lock-and-key with 24-hour CCTV cameras and its own guard dog. “Somewhere” was so as not to give you too many clues.

Thanks for the invitation. I’ll take you up on that in the near future - we can also chat about those conference plans.

Cheers!
