Liquid Refreshment

Last week, InterWined.com posted a video review of the 2004 Sauvignon Sol from the Fruili producer Ronco del Gnemiz as part of its submission to Wine Blogging Wednesday and vowed to get better acquainted the wines of Friuli-Venezia Giulia.

So, when we saw some more Ronco del Gnemiz offerings on sale at Cadman Wines for £11 a bottle, as part of its January Sale, we had to take advantage.

The 2003 Sauvignon blew InterWined away. Now, granted, we haven’t been around the Sauvignon block very much over here. In fact, our highest rated sauvignon is the Lomond Sugarbush, if memory serves. Not any longer.

The 2003 Ronco del Gnemiz Fruili Sauvignon is ready to drink now. Right now. There is intense melon on a fresh floral fragranced nose, with a kick-ass hint of jalepeno pepper, that is as thought-provoking as it is radical. The wine is swift and light with a perfect balance of savory and sweet. The wine was sampled at room temperature, to avoid the dumbing effect of chilling (which is almost always a must for Sauvignon), and it didn’t matter (put in the fridge for ten minutes max).

This wine’s acidity is created in such a way that it demands to be paired with Shrimp Creole. In fact, drinking any other wine with Shrimp Creole is now officially “a bad idea”. The finish is also much shorter than expected, which is great, because each time I took a sip, I was immediately ready for another. At £15: 9.1 points. At £11: 9.4 points.

No Joke.

What’s great is, next week, we’re going to review the 2003 Ronco del Gnemiz Tocai Fruilano. And, tomorrow, we’ll take a critical look at the Sublimelle brand.

You’re making me thirsty! Hungry too.
I am so glad that I ordered enough for the two of us.
