Liquid Refreshment

When this site started around two years ago, Petit Verdot (the little guy in the Bordeaux grape blend) was making some inroads as a single varietal wine. In areas of Spain, it was going great; in other areas, such as Australia, it was kinda ho-hum.

Now, that the crazy Aussies are more distracted by blending Viognier with everything, single producer Petit Verdots are getting more impressive.

Take the 2004 Kingston Echelon Petit Verdot, South Australia, Batch E-301B (which means little), for example.

Around £9 at Wines of Course, on Archway Road in London, a shop worth visiting, there is a nice dark, inky color to the wine, typical of PV, with violet and hints of sandalwood in the nose. The body is filled with carmelized vanilla. Yummy. But strong. It’s 15% ABV, so open a day before. Simply unscrew, then rescrew. While the wine’s drinkability improves over a day, it sadly loses some of the ripe fruit edge that was so pleasant: 8.6 points.
