Liquid Refreshment

For the theme of January’s Wine Blogging Wednesday, the hosts Jack and Joanne of Fork & Bottle chose the white wines of Friuli-Venezia Giulia.

Running along the Austrian/Slovenian border in northern Italy, the region is renowned for the high calibre of its white wines; but, perhaps, in the UK it is best known as the birthplace to the new England football manager Fabio Capello.

And just as Signor Capello has vowed to learn the English language, InterWined.com has promised to get to know the wines of Friuli-Venezia Giulia, starting with the province of Udine and the 2004 Ronco del Gnemiz Sauvignon Sol from the Colli Orientali del Friuli DOC, a stone’s throw (or twenty) from Capello’s hometown in Gorizia.

The 2004 Ronco del Gnemiz Sauvignon Sol, £23 from Planet of the Grapes Wine Bar in Leadenhall Market, in the City of London (available online in the United States from De-Vino Wine Boutique in New York and elsewhere for approximately $21, and in the UK from Cadman Fine Wines for £14.99.)

Well done video and just the right length. Let’s see, varietally correct, long finish and enjoyable - a winner! To me, it’s a great secret as to how good some of the Friuli sauvignon’s are.

Taking the video route, eh Sean? Well done. It also sounds like you fared a wee bit better than I with your selections. But that’s my own fault for intentionally choosing to shop within the confines of the Pennsylvania system. I’ll have to keep an eye out for the wines from Ronco del Gnemiz, which I haven’t yet encountered.

Jack: Thanks for the comments. InterWined really liked the challenge.

David: Although the post only mentioned De Vino in New York, I noticed that thre was a retailer in New Jersey too. It’s not quite Philly, but it’s getting closer.
