Liquid Refreshment

Earlier this week, InterWined was asked to name the perfect wine to go with the Daniel Radcliffe vehicle, My Boy Jack, directed by my friend Brian Kirk.

While there may be numerous excellent pairings, the best choice seems to be the 3 de Valandraud 2001, St. Emilion Grand Cru. The wine is a classically expensive, reputation-driven Bordeaux (mainly Merlot). Winemaker Jean Luc Thunevin is credited with being one of the founders of the garagiste movement in the region, where producers opt for smaller yields and vintages and sometimes put together their wines in the garage, thus the name.

At any rate, the soft, elegant cleanliness of the wine would balance the grit and grip of “My Boy Jack”. It has a long finish, just like the first World War, but the wine counters the movie really well by keeping itself in balance, with no surprises. In an added benefit, the wine is way expensive, just like war! It costs £25 pounds in Britain and up to $60 in America. 8.8 points.

A bit pricier than I would normally spend for something to sip during a movie, but a wine that I will look for nonetheless…
