Liquid Refreshment

Just so you know, InterWined hates wine bashing, but once in awhile, once in awhile…

There is a neat little wine shop often mentioned in these pages as a ‘go to’ type of place.

However, a recent trial there proved to be disastrous. While there is no point in naming and shaming the little guys — keep in mind that if you see the following two wines on the shelf, avoid at all costs. You’ll thank me.

Here, let the tasting notes speak for themselves:

The 2002 Bonny Doon Le Cigare Volant is a blend of five grapes, normally blended in the Chateau-neuf du Pape region of France, and tries to imitate the serious wines of the Pape. And fails. There is a strong Syrah (34 percent) characteristic, although it has more Mouvedre (36 percent) in the blend and the Grenache (22 percent) is nearly non-existent. There is some black olive and American tobacco (that can’t be good!) and the wine is tart with nice tannins. The color is a beautiful ruby red… so it is somewhat disappointing when tasted….Expected a whopper of a wine here, and got a whimper. This wine costs £25! What a gyp. No Rating.

The 2005 Domaine Eternal Cotes du Roussillon Vilages: The shelf talker for this wines mentions that the wine is a hit in the French media, and I think that you have to actually be French to enjoy it. On smelling, there is nothing special. The wine is so clean that it is a little strange. It just kinda is what it is. There is some caramel, some tartiness. A blend of Carignan, Grenache, Syrah. £12. No Rating.

We’ll get them next time.
