Liquid Refreshment

Finding good Mexican food in London can prove a challenge, but it pales in comparison to finding Mexican wine. And while Mexican wine might read like a misnomer, in recent years, its wines have won considerable renown and acclaim — particularly its wines from the California across the border, Mexico’s Baja California.

One such wine to win international recognition is the 2005 L.A. Cetto Petite Sirah from the Guadalupe valley in Baja California, £4.98 at Waitrose, and 2005 IWC silver medal winner. At 14.5% it has the high alcohol content increasingly common to North American wines and a serious punch. The nose is black pepper and the taste a mix of earth, black cherry, and Mexican chocolate. It makes an excellent companion to Habeas Brûlée’s Pomegranate Ginger Saffron Braised Lamb Neck.

Great post, and spot on… but no rating?

Since the wine was enjoyed with food and not on its own, it seemed hard to provide a rating. At a push: 8.7, the LA Cetto is certainly worth more than £4.98 and a sterling example of Mexican Wine.
