Liquid Refreshment

The recent purchase of several bottles from the Tesco’s Finest wine range yielded a big problem: the identity of each wine was wiped out.

The Tempranillo tastes like Australian Cabernet and has no taste of Rioja.

The Chablis lacks the flints and minerality of the region. It’s closer to an inexpensive Kiwi Sauvignon Blanc.

The Tesco Web site describes the Chablis in three ways:

First their own, where it is described as having “vibrant apricot flavours and a fresh long finish. This Chablis is a great match with lobster.”

Second from their wine expert: “Made from Chardonnay grapes selected from a number of different top quality vineyards, this delightful wine comes from Vaucher Père et Fils. Round and soft with light lemony aromas, it is an ideal match with a smoked salmon starter, although this has enough weight to match a roast chicken.”

Then by several ‘experts’ who say things like: “elegant, leafy, verdant,” and the “minerally, savoury characters of northern Burgundy’s chardonnay are key to the wine’s quality and identity.”

Three different reviews for one wine.
