Liquid Refreshment

Each Wednesday, InterWined.com is publishing a different part of its monthly interview with a leading, independent member of the wine industry in a feature it’s calling ‘InterWined In Conversation’.

Winemaker Jeff AstonFirst up to bat, this month, is Australian winemaker Jeff Aston of Even Keel Wines in New South Wales.

InterWined: Jeff, everyone; everyone, Jeff.

Jeff Aston: Hello.

IW: First of all, tell us about Even Keel.

JA: Wow, Well originally there were four winemakers who all worked for various big companies; and we decided to make a Rosé just for a bit of fun — so we could actually do something exactly how we wanted it and to drink it. Basically, it was for a bit of fun, and some wines for family and friends.

Well, it was a great hit and so two of us decided to take it further and gave up all our security of jobs, etc. and went out on our own….

The name was the first challenge, and we were full of excitement. My business partner and the other wine maker, Sam, was excitedly telling his dad about how we were starting our own wine label, and how great it was, and how we both had no jobs but that was fine because of the wine label. And Sam’s dad then replied, “Sam, Sam, calm down, keep an Even Keel”. Immediately after Sam hung up, he called me and the rest was perfect.

It represented exactly what we wanted to do, unpretentious great wines to help bring back balance to life. It’s about family friends and good times.

IW: Next week, Jeff speaks more about his upbringing and tells InterWined what it feels like to be a young and sexy winemaker in this day and age.

JA: Feels good.

IW: Thought so.
