Liquid Refreshment

Being a wine idiot isn’t as embarrassing as one may think.

Last week, InterWined walked into a wine shop that sells only French wines, and asked a stupid question in order to test the merchant’s ratio of expertise to arrogance.

“Do you have any Sauvignon Blanc?”

The man behind the counter responded with a polite, “of course, and right this way.”

Interwined was shown the white wines of the Loire Valley section. The merchant said, “This is Loire and all white wines from Loire are Sauvignon Blanc.”

Well, except for the Muscadet wines produced from the Melon du Bourgogne grape in the vineyards of the Nantais region on the Western end where the Loire dumps into the Atlantic.

And, except also for the vast amounts of Chenin Blanc abundantly produced in the Loire.

But, close enough, after all ‘ask a stupid question…’

The 2006 Les Champs Clos from Sancerre, Loire, is a Sauvignon Blanc. The mineral of the Sancerre was there as well as a lightness and wonderful acidity. Heavy lemon zip. Light and pricy, at £10, but worth it: 8.7 points. A perfect Old World wine for the grill.
