Liquid Refreshment

Recent negative news flow on the rising rates of irresponsible alcohol consumption have centered around beer-consuming binge drinkers.

Wine is getting unhealthier as well.

More and more, companies are shifting into a fruitier, high-in-alcohol style. And, InterWined.com will expose more of these business tactics as time allows.

You see, the ripe flavors help mask the fact that, by the time the bottle is finished, you were too tipsy to care about what was consumed. In many cases with these wines, and more than two people around the table, the average consumption shifts to more than one bottle per person, which equals a higher volume of wine needed for purchase — say for a party.

If you have ten people over, that’s a case easy, isn’t it? Not if that’s a case of Tannat from the South of France, my friend. (Just kidding, no one likes Tannat, except the locals.)

The easiest test when selecting a wine is to consider, ‘can it be gulped?’

If you think you can take one, single five-ounce sip of any wine, it isn’t worth the time. This applies to larger labels and not to smaller producers of lower in alcohol and softer styled wines, such as Beaujolais winemakers (Gamay grape).

Sip and enjoy; but keep gulping and land in a world of hurt.
