Liquid Refreshment

InterWined.com’s ‘Friend in Houston’ remarked that an earlier post, which suggested drinking Sauvignon Blanc out of a straw, was a neat idea, but that the suggested wine, Beringer, was just not good enough…

True enough, of all grapes Sauvignon Blanc is going through the same overproduction phase as Pinot Grigio, in Italy, in the early 2000s. Since then many Italian producers have scaled back yield, by cutting grapes off the vine and letting them drop to the ground. This allows the vine to focus more on the health of the fruit it does have, lending more minerals and sugars and acids to the grapes currently growing.

A quick overview of major Sauvingon Blanc producers, in the InterWined price range, found remarkable similarities. In fact, Oyster Bay from New Zealand, tastes similar to the Beringer. This is great for those who wish to drink Sauvignon Blanc that tastes like Sauvignon Blanc every time, but not for InterWined, which prefers diversity, unpredictability, and, above all else, the sense of human craft in wine.

InterWined recommends that everyone get out there and buy a Sauvignon Blanc without a global brand name attached: Explore, reach out, and let’s see what we can find.

Funny you mentioned the Oyster Bay…I tried the 2005 (?) at a wine bar last Thursday, and enjoyed it enough to make a “note to self” for my next trip to Spec’s. Maybe it was the ambiance?

Sorry FIH, didn’t mean to sound down on those SBs. We love the Beringer and the Oyster Bay, just surprised that the two taste so similar, being, you know, from opposite ends of the world.

I think we need a trip to the Loire to sort this out some more… what was the wine bar?

Curious.

Wine, coffee and free wireless?

Wine education and private functions?

Excellent…

Too bad their list isn’t available online, yet, but they deserve some promotion: Cork Cafe.
