Drinking Wine, Talking Turkey

InterWined is an unusual beast, where coincidence is often coupled with shock.
So imagine the surprise when InterWined found that one of the best red wines to go with Turkey (the bird) is actually produced from vineyards in Turkey (the country).

The 2005 Yakut Kavaklidere is made with the Anatolian-derived Kalecik Karasi grape, from Western Turkey, and costs £6.50. It is light and earthy, with tobacco-like aromas. The wine itself is different — very different — so much so that it must be tried to understand fully. However, the lack of fruit and strong oak structure in the wine will prevent an overpowering of the bird’s nuances. A turkey (especially one from woodland and not a farm) roasted with butter and rosemary would really put the cherry on top for this unusual and head scratching wine and food pairing: 8.4.

Little is know about Karasi, other than it is a tough little ink-black grape native to Turkey that was driven nearly to extinction years back.

Well, it’s still around and hopefully we will have opportunites to explore it more.
