Liquid Refreshment

Europe has a problem that doesn’t strike InterWined as an actual problem: it has too much wine.

But the EU is spending $400 million a year on subsidies to Europe’s winemakers in order to buy unsold stocks. Now that is going to end, next year, as low quality wine becomes a thing of the past in Europe.

The EU will implement several changes that will bring European winemakers closer to a New World style of wine production.

InterWined applauds the move, with slow moving hands and squinting eyes, and will explain in future posts why this change is not all it’s cracked up to be; but for now a suitable celebration!

The 2004 Windy Peak Australia Sangiovese is produced by deBortoli and widely available across the US and UK. The grape, Sangiovese, is Italian born and breed, most notably in Chianti. Windy Peak is no Chianti, of course; and it taste too overproduced. The hints of strawberry and asphalt textures aren’t present in this bright version. And even though the blackberry and oak kinda make up for it, it tastes more new world than old.

The finish is abrupt and the body lacks weight, but the wine is fun enough to mention and should merit some conversation, whether enjoyed with friends or by oneself. It also has an earthy profile, great for more rustic foods, such as fowl with course tomatoes and olives. Would be splendid with dark chocolate: 8.3.
